How would they make a sequel?
I'm pretty sure I remember someone posting a link early on in the games announcement for NA that the development team for Catherine had a great time working on this game and that they're very much considering going back into development for a sequel seeing as it sold well.
My only question is, how do you make a sequel to a game with no definite ending? Because if they make a sequel where the nightmares are happening to someone else then wouldn't that mean that an ending where Thomas Mutton isn't stopped and the nightmares continue (I'm not sure if that is an ending, I have only gotten the True Lovers ending but I'm just saying if there IS) would be the real ending to the game, making it quite a sad ending.
So basically, how would there be a sequel? Is that just how it'd go?

As Enzeru said I doubt it would be a direct sequel; it would probably the same/similar gameplay mechanics but a toootttttaaaalllyyy different plot and world.
Personally if the do make a sequel I hope they don't name it Catherine 2, but rather something else that has two alternate spellings of a name (I am aware there is no such difference in the Japanese version).

By only using the Golden Playhouse and the role it played in the story.

How about let's keep it self contained and just have the developers keep making original stuff and shin.... seriously dlc is all I can see if ya want to puzzles but a sequel would be a cash in. It ended perfectly I would hate to see them run it to the ground.

Here's a rhetorical question for you Vin, how do they keep making SMT games that have nothing to do with the previous game?

Yeah I would think the most you'd see is the golden playhouse reused and the series itself may be liek some type of 'tales in the city' type thing where each game/story is unique, but you MIGHT spot details amongst the game from other games (like a character in the next one walking past the stray sheep in a cinematic or bumping into a sullen Vincent in the subway.
If they went that route, it would be interesting (and damn hard) to see them actually tie in all the varied games/stories and have one final collective game that brought them all together and showed the player just why each was significant in the greater realm of things... They sort of did that with the newer semi-anthology 'Trick r'Treat and I loved how it all fell together by the end. Lotsa fun. Not too many games have tried to pull this off tho.. so it's a newer and unique concept that wouldn't necessarily expand the budget as much as require clever planning and forethought.

It'd be cool if it had it's own series of Golden Playhouse. Each game would be a different television program and the host would be different.

Well it always could be a prequel where you play as Thomas Mutton.
But i guess because he is so old the setting might be to hard.

Has no one heard of Elvira and the old Movie Macabre show?
That's more or less what Trish and the Golden Theater directly reference, just minus the goth get-up and theme.
The movies, big hair and cleavage are still there, though. "Catherine" is just another movie on Trish's weekend show (her other role notwithstanding). This sort of show was a bigger deal in the 70s and 80s, not so much today.
MST3k was also in that vein, setting aside they would directly make fun of the movie while it ran.
Future games could feature Trish introducing different movies under different themes and styles, possibly tie them together loosely in some way to connect them even if they don't relate directly and have totally different gameplay. Its what SMT games already do, though SMT has more of a multiverse approach.
Only thing I have to say further on Trish is... new hairstyle next time, OK?

Well the way I remember it sounding was that it would be some sort of direct sequel...obviously I was mistaken. No need to throw it back at me...

catherine 2
I think they left it open for part two, in one of the endings. once Vincent knows she is daughter of a powerful demon he still wants to be with her but she is not sure if they can be together so she tells him i will think about it and let you know once we see each other again so now i can see him going againts demons trying to stop him from marring Catherine he most past the trials to be with her at least thats how i imaged to be if there is a sequel to it.

As long as we get more block tower puzzles and an interesting narrative, sold. Probably pre-ordered.

They need to make Golden Playhouse it's own brand/franchsie it needs to be an Anthology series in the vain more of a mix of the twilight zone series and stuff like Monstervision(stories with little to no relation besides reoccuring themes of weirdness thrown in and Maybe a cameo like meeting up with a friend dating a girl named Catherine, who looks different but has the same voice actress and personality as Catherine as a little wink to the fans of that game.) I do want golden playhouse itself to have different host, like instead of the super sexy Trisha it's a genre savvy cool guy like Joe bob Briggs or Some very serious Rod sterling "Submitted for your Approval" type
The only thing I ask of the developers that it is different but simple game play like the block of towers/jenga-ish gameplay of Catherine.
