Is this a good start in the series?
I can finally post threads, so I'm going to ask the question I came here to ask.
Since I'm a fan of games with heavy stories (Heavy Rain is one of my favorite games for a long time), and RPGs with unique features, Persona sounds great, but is this a good start for someone who has never played a Persona game? I know the stories are separate, but should I play the originals first? italics to make me look cool.

P3P is a good start as that the story is quite irrelevant to the previous games except for a cameo or two. Unlike the other Persona games, this one is fully packed as that it is an enhanced remake!

Be aware that P1 and P2 have rather dated gameplay. P3 and P4 are much more slick.

Well, I went ahead and got it right after this post, and it's really not bad at all. It's pretty good. Love the story, as I predicted, and the combat's not bad, there just aren't many skills or anything, but RPGs always suck at the beginning, and get better the more stuff there is. I'll definitely get Persona 4 whenever it gets remade onto the Vita or something.

I think this is a great introduction game to the series, since this is how I got introduced to Persona and SMT in general. It's a lot more streamline in game play than the older series, which suffered from waaay too many attack types. (though P4 shorten it even more by taking away two attack types and kinda combinding them into one). It lets you kinda get an idea of how spells work, the general concepts that show up in most of the games. The added choice of gender might also appeal to some as well.

Persona 4 was my first Persona, and it was a great entry into the series. I'm pretty sure Persona 3 is a good game for entering players as well. If anything, I would wait to finish the new Personas before playing the old ones.
