The main things we are aiming to preserve from Earthbound are the unique atmosphere and personality of the game. The storyline, characters and mechanics will be quite different.

As most Atlus fans probably know, US localization of Japanese games, especially JRPGs, are getting more and more scarce. Japanese publishers are losing faith in the US market because they think we're just obsessed with army FPS shooters, which is true to an extent.
In other words, we believe that it is important to show why JRPGs are great especially if we don't want JRPGs to become an endangered species here. One way to do this is to support publishers like Atlus USA, which we agree with. We want to do it with a game that doesn't cost $60. We know that we are just a drop in the ocean, but for us, this is a reason to fight harder.
As for the shabby graphics, I apologize. As I mentioned earlier, this game has only recently returned from the grave, and is not even in a beta state. I can assure you that the final assets will be much more polished.
