Default Do you Remember ~An Earthbound-inspired RPG~ (Kickstarter)

Hi guys,

Demo Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?53y8cca5lyah8vq

My name is malifaux and I am the co-developer of a new game called Do You Remember. It is our attempt to pay homage to what makes JRPGs great. Above are the links for the Kickstarter and the trailer. I am not here to start a flamewar so if you are not interested, kindly ignore this thread. I would, however, really appreciate it if you gave it a chance. Any suggestions or constructive criticism welcome. Thanks for listening.

It looks good, my only problem here seems to be the lack of scenes of some actual whackiness or just funny lines. I know that may not be possible, but the second you said Earthbound, I expected some funny lines in there.

Thanks for the compliment. This project is actually a few years old and was just revived recently. It was originally developed in Japanese with release into the Japanese RPG community in mind. So, we are still hard at work translating the dialogue and code. Our lead designer is one of the hugest Earthbound fans so you can definitely look forward to that unique whackiness.

We're hoping that the Kickstarter community in the US can help us get a US release first!

So if it looks like Earthbound and plays like Earthbound why not just play Earthbound?

I mean this REALLY looks like a fan made game. Why not just play the professional made games.

I agree with DC-sensei. The original is better..

Thanks for the comments guys.

The main things we are aiming to preserve from Earthbound are the unique atmosphere and personality of the game. The storyline, characters and mechanics will be quite different.

As most Atlus fans probably know, US localization of Japanese games, especially JRPGs, are getting more and more scarce. Japanese publishers are losing faith in the US market because they think we're just obsessed with army FPS shooters, which is true to an extent.

In other words, we believe that it is important to show why JRPGs are great especially if we don't want JRPGs to become an endangered species here. One way to do this is to support publishers like Atlus USA, which we agree with. We want to do it with a game that doesn't cost $60. We know that we are just a drop in the ocean, but for us, this is a reason to fight harder.

As for the shabby graphics, I apologize. As I mentioned earlier, this game has only recently returned from the grave, and is not even in a beta state. I can assure you that the final assets will be much more polished.

It's not interesting to hear how you'll be trying to emulate Earthbound. What would be interesting is to hear how you intend to destroy Earthbound, to wipe it out from the collective consciousness and replace its memory with that of your game. Give us concrete details and evidence of that and we may be more willing to listen.

The burden on you is exponentially higher (as it should be) because you're not just asking for our attention and patience, but also our money. Up front, at that. This weighs so much heavier on our prospective faith. Though I believe this whole Kickstarter trend is something of an abomination-in-the-making (why should we pay for any product before we receive it?), at least Tim Schafer had a reputation to throw into the pot.

(what becomes of that reputation is, of course, what he's wagering)

What are you wagering against our dollars? Why is this worth our money and faith? What guarantees do we have that not only will this be worth our money and faith, but that you won't simply skip town (so to speak) when you get a sufficient amount?

These are the questions you need to answer before you hand us the collection plate.

Hello Kenji,

Thank you for your comments. But, It seems like you are questioning the whole Kickstarter system rather than just our game. There are lots of big names that come to Kickstarter to sell people something that they perhaps couldn't do with the resources they have at hand. But there are also lots of people like us who are just dropping by to say "Hey! wouldn't it be cool if this existed?". And if you agree, then we can all make something together. I like this because it emphasizes the point that without fans, most of this stuff wouldn't exist.

As for concrete evidence...
