THINK, you mooks. Websites, unless they are specifically behind an age gate, are viewable by everyone. That means that all the content on a non-gated site must meet an E rating lest we get hit with fines and censures.
Honestly, we go over this pile every single time there's some discrepancy between the original artwork and advertising art used in the US. You'd think I'd be used to it by now.
|
If you ask me, the ESRB still determines what's fit for public consumption. No "Voluntary" rating means it can't be sold in stores and no console license. Probably a lesser evil than the government, but still an evil.
And how were we supposed to think about or even know the game sites had to be rated E or get hit with fines.
First time I've seen this pile. Really, the only time I recall it happening was with L'arc rise fantasia. And them underboobs ended up getting censored so I don't see a reason not to raise a stink.
Only thing we got was a cryptic "There are reasons why the website is the way it is that have nothing to do with the content of the game." While the response is appreciated, still didn't clear much up.
Also are red named admins players or people who actually work for Atlus? Cause...

Really, it wasn't your comment that started this. It was the guy claiming that we "censored" Catherine's boxart, and therefore, it was likely that we would be "censoring" this game as well...a game which isn't even complete yet.

This one's kind of common sense. You go to any site for a game that's rated Mature, and you're hit with an age gate. Videos on Gametrailers, IGN, wherever, if the content's mature, it's behind an age gate. You haven't noticed this, somehow? Or you thought publishers were just uniformly doing this on their own?
There are going to be times where we expect you connect the dots and not immediately jump to the conspiracy theory conclusion, specifically because we don't know what's kosher to comment on and what isn't. So we sit back and hope that you'll connect the dots and figure it out, and in this case, Monkmaster79 totally did.

Honestly, how did that NOT clear everything up for you? Looking at that sentence from a outside perspective, it delineates a clear difference between web content and game and tells you that the changes made to the website are not changes that will be made to the game. Something like that is as close to flaunting the "no-talky zone" as we can get, and the feedback we get from that is, "Psh. I dunno what that means. Could be anything."
We can't come out and directly tell you most everything. That means you're going to have to get better at reading between the lines sometimes.

Pretty much everyone with a red name works at Atlus.

There's no law that a game must be rated by the ESRB in order to be made available for sale. A great many stores and chains have enacted corporate policies that prevent them from carrying games that are not rated under a certain level, and those are corporate decisions. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have all decided that games must be rated by the ESRB before they will be allowed to be published for their respective consoles. Again, that is a corporate decision and not one determined by any law. The same holds for other ratings boards (CERO, PEGI, USK, GRB, etc.) in other regions/countries. That said, unrated games do exist on the PC, and they are available from whichever retailers are willing to carry them.
Advertising materials are likewise subject to ratings, which is why a game's advertisements are either restricted to appropriate audiences (behind age gates), or toned down in content. The next time you see a game commercial on TV, count how many times someone fires a gun--and count how many times somebody is shown being shot. Explosions, near-misses, and sparks from flying bullets abound, but nobody actually gets hit.

This thread has been an experience.
On the one side, we have the standard "Atlus, if you do anything to change the original, you are capitulating to the prudish whims of the Westerners. For shame!" On the other, there's a surprising appearance of "Atlus, if you don't change anything, you're disgusting enablers of the Japanese ero-industry! For shame!" (Okay, that was just Shinobi100, but it still made me laugh.) I'm personally more embarrassed by the attention the center-screen catgirl pubis in the GL4 intro movie is getting, but we've all got our own levels of
There are always complaints whenever there's the slightest hint that content will be edited during our localizations. From the cover art of Luminous Arc 2 and Devil Survivor (and, to a lesser extent, Catherine), to the purposeful ambiguity of certain characters' sexualities in P4, people who feel slighted about the most minuscule alterations outside the game will raise a stink to high heaven only to find out that we've changed nothing in the game itself. The sheer extent of this particular instance (Two character portraits are missing! They must have been expunged from the game!) is what has me climbing the walls in frustration.

You'll notice that I'm not actually providing you with any information about Dragon's Crown myself, just relaying background information and letting the readers make inferences.
And, yes, the people in the red names do work at Atlus. We're the people actually working on the games (aside from A.R.A.M., who watches our every move in order to report on our activities, but doesn't touch the games themselves).

wow, nice attack on the dude, calling him a basement dweller, nice!
I trust Atlus knows what they're doing, and plus, the game won't be out for another year (if not a little longer), so why freak out and make assumptions now? You guys are silly.

I see, I never really paid much attention to those age gates after the 5th time I saw them. I usually put that I'm 100 years old or something with an angry flick of the wrist. I think for all the games I had to do that for were for violence anyways.
The sorcress' and the amazon's art just stuck out because I remember visiting the site when UTV was publishing and being greeted with GLORIOUS works of art. I mean I thought the game looked good, but then I was presented with two more major features of the game. That was of course when I first heard about the game, but once you see the Mona Lisa, you don't forget her!
Actually, I can't even remember if the site had an age gate before the switch to Atlus. Like I said, I just fill em out as fast as possible.

I'm surprised how fast this thread unraveled from a simple thank you thread to...well, whatever it is now.
Anyway on to another topic, will the Vita version have a nice full-colored manual like the rest of Atlus' titles or are you guys going to follow what Sony is doing and just include a sheet of paper with the controls?

Yeah what's with getting rid of the manuals with games? I've read that the Vita games doesn't come with manuals and there's EA that stopped giving manuals with their games putting it online instead. I'm all for saving paper but when I get a game I always like to flip through the manual first and sometimes it's really usefull or has some great art inside. Are we getting so lazy that people doesn't want to read anymore or what?
Getting back to the game, I can't wait to get more info. Can we level up? Is there some skill trees or skills per level? Can we use the same levelled character over and over again (kind of New Game+)? What about the loot?

Well this time Atlus has included their own producer(s) to helm the project so I think chances are better that we'll see this game.

The reason things went sour for GKH was because Vanillaware was working on this.
They couldn't spare any manpower to work on inserting the English text for GKH.

This thread is terrifying. Terrifying.
I don't know what's worse: The jumping to conclusions with baseless conjecture or self-righteousness of... some people.
Anyway, I'm glad that the game it getting some kind of release. I like me a side-scrolling beat em' up. Shame about the wait, but if you have to wait, you have to wait. Can't do much about it.

Ha I must need more coffee.. when I saw you mentioning Side scrolling Beat em up the first think that came to mind was a converted version of P4 Arena where you play as any of the hero's 'Double Dragon' style, walking the streets of inaba and beyond to beat up hundreds of shadows and demons.. hehehe... and i really LIKED the idea too.. hehehe
Good to see you around again Topo, been a while eh? or am I still being dense...

Why take it halfway?
Lets go full on Atlus/Vanillaware Partnership and get these great game the attention they truly deserve.
I know tons of people who would love to play these games on their new vitas. The colors POP on that screen and it would be AMAZING for a Vanillaware game!

Again, the funniest thing about the whole ESRB wanting no underboob or cleavage is that I've seen movie covers, anime covers, and unrestricted age websites with much more "partial nudity" being shown. It also makes me wonder if the people at ESRB have ever walked outside and seen today's fashion. Just sayin.

There are a couple solutions for anyone trying to publish extremely controversial material, and I do consider a sorceress with mutated, disproportionately large boobs that flop around and are covered with a lacie undergarment as highly controversial. You could:
A.) Have an option to turn on such material in the game. For instance, how you can turn off blood in the console versions of Metal Gear Solid. That might be too much work so here's another choice
B.) Offer the questionable material as DLC a couple weeks after release, either the paid or free variety.
Option B allows you to not have to worry about having your game ignored by hundred, maybe thousands, maybe tens of thousands of gamers and moms who would love to buy the game but have to ignore it due to this little thing called a conscience
