Honestly, I'm dissapointed in it. I'm a big fan of MV, but it's all kinda been going downhill since Deloused, IMO. The composition is just brilliant in all the songs, and they perform them brilliantly, but it's nothing...special. I'm REALLY dissapointed in the sound quality! It's sooo muddy and poorly EQed. It's so distracting. I mean, this is 2008. There should be no more bad mixes, especially in popular music like this.

Worth picking up? Sure. CD to recommend to a noobie in Mars Volta appreciation? No.

EDIT: Admittedly, it's growing on me. But not there yet.

Honestly, the production quality of stuff doesn't usually bother me. I've been listening to broke ass indie bands recording in garages for so long that I don't even notice stuff like that anymore

Did you listen to the first few songs when they leaked or did you hold off until you actually bought the CD? Because I was extremely disappointed when I heard Aberinkula and Goliath months ago, but I started getting used to them after a couple of listens. Aberinkula still is far from being my favorite TMV song, but the other 3 I've heard had (have) me pumped for the rest of the album.

No, I held off. I wanted to be surprised. And when I say that the mix is bad, I mean it in a way that it was meant to be good, but turns out to be distracting because certian instruments, harmonic passages, ect, are brought out or covered up in awful and wrong places. I love me a good indie garage sound band, and this is not that sound. That being said, there are a couple of tracks that really stand out as being pretty stellar. The last track, Conjugal Burns, is VERY good.

Also, I'm not that crazy about the new drummer. He does his job, but that's about it.

I think Thomas Pridgen does pretty well from what I've heard, but I guess we'll have to see if he's as good as Jon Theodore at actually coming up with material.
Thanks for the impressions, though.

Inspired by my current project, I'm listening to The Black Rider by Tom Waits.

(It is impossible to guess what I'm working on based on this information.)
