STORY

The only thing I can remember is coming to in the middle of an unfamiliar snowscape. Where that was or how I got there, I don't know. I couldn't even remember my own name. The memories just wouldn't come.

I only had a moment, left at a loss, to ponder what to do — but fate seemed intent on furthering my misery as a giant, insect-like monster burst from the snow and ice to attack me.

Naturally, I ran like hell. The creature cornered me anyway.

That's when SHE appeared, as if from nowhere — the beautiful, mysterious girl who saved my life.

She told me her name was Kuon. A beautiful, mysterious girl...

...with a tail and ears like a beast's.

SYSTEM

Gameplay

Gameplay in Utawarerumono is divided into two different segments. The game’s story progresses as the game alternates between each mode, with adventure sequences setting the stage for each successive battle.

Adventure Mode

In adventure segments, players can watch the story unfold through “visual novel”-style scenes and dialogue between characters therein. At some points, you may have the opportunity to choose Haku’s next destination.

Battle Mode

As you progress through the story, critical confrontations will play out as SRPG-style battles.

1. Before battle

Select the characters you wish to participate in the conflict. Some encounters will require particular characters to take the field.

2. Battle

In battle, units act in descending order of each unit’s SPD attribute. Be mindful of each unit’s SPD, elemental affinity, and available suite of actions!

3. End of battle

Battle ends when all victory conditions have been met. Rewards like experience, bonus points, and equipment are given after each battle’s conclusion.

Battle Mechanics

Action Chains

The exact sequence of actions in a chain is unique to the unit performing it, and may include attacking, healing, buffing, and countering. New action chains can be learned by leveling up, and more actions are added to existing chains over time.

Example:

Unjoh Ryuhen
First Hit – Normal damage + daze
Second Hit – Additional damage + increase area of effect

While performing an action chain, one of the following types of rings will be displayed onscreen.
Normal
  • Normal rings grow smaller over time. Pressing the attack button while the ring is shrinking will trigger the next action in the chain.
  • Pressing the attack button while the ring is at its smallest will induce a critical hit.
Charge
  • Charge rings fill over time in a clockwise direction. Press and hold the attack button, then release it when the ring is full to trigger the next action in the chain.
  • Letting go at the precise moment the ring fills completely will induce a critical hit.
Auto Success Mode

Players who experience difficulty completing action chains may turn on auto success mode to trigger actions for them, but the unit performing the chain will be unable to make critical hits while doing so.

Skills

Skills are abilities that can be triggered when a unit is defending against an attack, and include a variety of effects, including dodging and countering. When you have an opportunity to trigger a skill, two rings will appear onscreen. Press the button when they overlap to execute the skill.

Examples:

  • Close Dodge – Dodges a melee attack.
  • First Aid I – Recovers a small amount of HP when struck by a melee attack.

Overzeal

Units build up zeal by performing most action chains (though some cost zeal instead of granting it). If a unit reaches full (100) zeal, it will enter an overzeal state and become able to act once more. During overzeal, units:

  • Recover from all status ailments
  • Can perform action chains at zero zeal cost

Units also receive bonuses based on their elemental affinity during overzeal.

Examples:

  • Earth God's Blessing – Reduces incoming damage.
  • Water God’s Blessing – Increases the duration of positive effects and decreases duration of negative effects.

Final Strike

As units level up, more actions are added to their action chains, culminating in the unit learning a Final Strike. Final Strikes are unique to each character, and may be used when an action chain is successfully completed during overzeal.

Each Final Strike has its own special effects and animations, and performing one will end the overzeal state.

CHARACTERS

Haku

The protagonist of this story, who awakens in a strange, snowy land with nothing more than the clothes on his back to his name. Kuon charitably takes him in and — upon discovering that he suffers from total amnesia — names him Haku, and he travels with her for lack of any other clear options in his new surroundings. Most would call him chronically lazy and flippant, but when the need arises, he navigates dangerous situations with surprising intelligence and craftiness.

His physical ability, on the other hand, is so pathetic that Kuon worries about leaving him unattended for fear of finding him dead in a ditch.

Haku

Kuon

The protagonist's energetic savior and caretaker, and the girl who gave him the name Haku. She possesses no small amount of cheer and wit, and despite her young age demonstrates an exceptional aptitude for her work as an apothecary. Though much of her personal life is shrouded in mystery, she seems to be traveling to see the world.

Kuon

Rulutieh

The youngest princess of Kujyuri, one of several countries that comprise the great empire of Yamato. While delicate and cripplingly shy, she is nonetheless charming, graceful, and down-to-earth. When Haku and his companions encounter her, she is accompanying her nation's tribute to the Mikado on its way to the Imperial Capital. Cares deeply for her pet hororon bird, Cocopo.

Rulutieh

Nekone

Ukon's younger sister, a genius scholar widely considered to be a child prodigy, having passed the extremely rigorous imperial exam at a younger age than anyone before her. While she speaks in an overly rigid, formal manner to seem more mature than she really is, she's known to be fond of sweets and intensely attached to her elder sibling. Her area of specialty is the study of ancient civilizations.

Nekone

Oshtor

The Imperial Guard of the Right of Yamato, never seen without his mystical Akuruka mask. He is adored by the people of Yamato and trusted implicitly by its emperor, the revered Mikado. An accomplished veteran of both battle and politic.

Oshtor

Ukon

A traveler and mercenary captain Haku and Kuon encounter in a remote Kujyuri village. While rough around the edges and a little boisterous, he commands immense respect from his men, and is currently contracted to escort a caravan of offerings to the Imperial Capital.

Ukon

Maroro

A scholar versed in magecraft who accompanies Ukon. He wears flashy clothing and old-fashioned nobleman's makeup, and speaks in a distinctly classical fashion.

Maroro

Nosuri

A self-professed "noble thief" and the vivacious, buxom leader of a band of Robin Hood-style outlaws she named after herself, the Nosuri Thieves. She has a penchant for the dramatic, and her younger brother Ougi can eternally be found at her side, facilitating her grandiose schemes.

Nosuri

Ougi

Nosuri's devoted younger brother and her right-hand man in leading the Nosuri Theives. Remarkably polite, efficient, and possessed of an extraordinary cunning.

Ougi

Jachdwalt

A master swordsman who bears the title of Mirage Blade, a moniker fashioned for his infamous swordplay techniques, thought to be so lightning-quick that observers can only catch a fleeting afterimage of each stroke. Wanders the world to hone his craft, and answers to no man in this pursuit.

Jachdwalt

Shinonon

Jachdwalt’s highly energetic young daughter. Often mistaken for a boy due to her masculine speech. Accompanies her father wherever he goes.

Shinonon

Uruuru/Saraana

Enigmatic and capricious twins who appear and disappear seemingly at random, nearly identical if not for Uruuru's fair skin distinguishing her from Saraana's tan. They seem to be capable of hiding themselves beyond mundane sight, and use this ability to follow Haku and his companions undetected

— but to what end is unclear at best.

Uruuru/Saraana

Uruuru/Saraana

— but to what end is unclear at best.

Uruuru/Saraana

Mikazuchi

The Imperial Guard of the Left of Yamato and an Akuruturuka, one of the bearers of the masks of power. His fighting prowess is said to match that of Oshtor’s, and together they are known as the Twin Shields of Yamato. In contrast with Oshtor, however, he has the wild and fierce demeanor of a battle-hardened warrior. Raiko is his elder brother.

Mikazuchi

Raiko

One of the Eight Pillar Generals of Yamato, known as Raiko the Sage. His expertise does not lie in direct combat ability, but rather in his ingenious tactics. It is said that he can seize a fortress simply through his masterful control of the battlefield, and he is renowned as the finest strategist in Yamato. He is the elder brother of the Imperial Guard of the Left, Mikazuchi.

Raiko

Atuy

A cheerful, fearless girl eternally in search of true love. Her temperament vacillates between bubbly and — when a spear is put into her capable hands — violently fearsome, and her pet Kurarin can often be found perched atop her head like a hat. She speaks with a refined, albeit provincial accent.

Atuy

Kiwru

An amiable young prince of Ennakamuy, another nation within Yamato. Though meek, small in stature, and often painfully naïve, he applies himself tirelessly to his combat practice and aspirations of greatness. Shares an oath of sworn brotherhood with Oshtor.

Kiwru

Anju

The young, pampered Imperial Princess of Yamato and heiress to the throne of her father, the divine Mikado. She speaks in the lofty, regal manner characteristic of high nobility, and possesses a unique innocence and naïveté. Adored by the people of her empire.

Anju

Munechika

Known as Munechika the Guardian. She is one of Yamato's military paragons, the Eight Pillar Generals, and bearer of one of the vaunted Akuruka masks. As her title implies, she excels in defensive and siegebreaking tactics, and attacks against Yamato by barbarian hordes and organized militaries alike have fallen to the wayside before her prowess. In peacetime, she acts as governess to Anju, who often selfishly ropes her into mischief.

Munechika

Karulau

Owner and master of the Hakurokaku Inn, a popular establishment within the Imperial Capital. A beautiful woman with an air of grace and elegance, there is a sense of exoticism about her that reminds one of distant lands...

Karulau

Touka

A worker at the Hakurokaku Inn, a popular establishment within the Imperial Capital. She approaches all things with the utmost seriousness, but nevertheless seems to struggle with her housekeeping duties.

Touka

Benawi

The warmaster of Tuskur. He rides a pure white steed into battle alongside his second-in-command, Kurou. He is a skilled tactician, able to make calm and precise decisions in any situation, and a peerless master of the spear.

Benawi

Kurou

A warrior of Tuskur and Benawi’s right-hand man. He prides himself on his strength and experience on the battlefield. He comes across as brash, fearless, and stouthearted.

Kurou

Aruruu

One of the ambassadors from Tuskur, and Eruruu’s younger sister. She seems to have the body language of a small woodland animal, and she speaks with a distinct terseness, veering from being simply laconic to painfully blunt. She is often seen with a giant white tiger-like creature named Mukkuru, and a holy animal named Gachatara.

Aruruu

Camyu

A kamunagi (priestess) of Tuskur who wields powerful thaumaturgy. She moves with an ethereal grace, and has grand black wings on her back. She comes to Yamato as an ambassador on behalf of the nation of Tuskur. She is a princess of the Onkamiyamukai.
